Time to give back…
The life of a starting pitcher’s family should only be anxious every five to six days, depending on an off day in the schedule. Our anticipation is less than two days away based on the last “trip” to the bump by the Kansas City Royals 19 year-old left-hander playing in the Carolina League.
Meanwhile, as we patiently wait for the next start of John Lamb in another road start for the Wilmington Blue Rocks, our family is busy giving a little back. During the last four years many kind families have opened their homes and hearts to my son.
Last week, our family has returned the favor to another family in Florida with a safe place for their son to stay during his summer away from home. Of course, he is here playing Connie Mack baseball in Southern California and doing a fine job for a 16 year-old. We were asked and didn’t blink with the answer to ease a young man’s wish to improve and develop away from his home. Besides, now there is another arm to throw the dog’s toy around the house.
As many can attest in professional baseball, there are plenty of days away from the family. Distance can be a challenge for survival playing the game at the professional level, but I am a firm believer the earlier those obstacles are negotiated the better.
